Horror Book Covers

Designing book covers is like giving birth, it can be a "pain" and sometimes no "labor" at all. There is a pleasure in the end result, when everything you put into it finally comes together and says, "THAT'S IT!" Not always does it come right away, but after many trials and errors (and I haven't had many of them)you find something that works and it unfolds in front of you.

My most difficult cover was "Water Hazard" took me weeks only because the author couldn't make up his mind and when he did, he didn't quite like it and it needed to be tweaked a bit (more like ALOT), and when the cover was finally to his liking...he didn't use it!

Now, of course, he wasn't an author from Vamplit, because all authors from Vamplit are awesome! Am I right?! I've never, ever had a problem with doing a cover for Vamplit, NEVER. In fact, I can usually spit out a cover in record time and have it turn out perfect usually the first time round.

So, all you authors, if ever you need a book cover come see me, I am the one who works for Vamplit now and solely does the covers, Gaynor may do one here and there, but it's mainly me. If you have already put in your manuscript with her and it's been accepted, you need to see me next and tell me what you want in a book cover.

Hope to see you all soon!

  1. As I plan on writing many novels for Vamplit, you will be doing my covers. I know you will do a great job! I can't wait to see what you come up with for me! Ooh, la, la!

Hi, Sue. Thanks again. I'm not entirely sure that Gaynor thinks were quite done with our's, but that's okay. Working with you was a pleasure.

  3. What makes you say that James? From what I gathered from her, she loves the cover! Especially the eyes! It's a done deal! It was great working with you as well.

    1. Ever since she shut down Vamplit Publishing she doesn't talk to anyone, not even me her Artistic Director and close friend. I was the one who designed the book covers for her. Can I help?

  6. I wish you could; I really need a written statement asserting that the rights to my book have reverted to me. It's not like I have another buyer or anything, but I'd like them all the same.

    1. The rights do belong to you, as I have re-published my novel. She should have sent you the formated manuscript and formated book cover back to you. I can leave a message for her husband, Andy, who seems to be the only one communicating with me and ask him, but it may take awhile, but you do own the rights, because its not on Drive thru horror website and the ISBN number will have to be changed, because once she shut down, that # became obsolete.

  7. Well, that's good to know...but I'd like some sort of written statement; I've never received the manuscript or cover. I'm not in a huge hurry, but yeah, I'd sure like that.

Thanks much for any help you can offer!

Countess Elizabeth Bathory

In my research I came across Countess Elizabeth Bathory and found this person to be truly a horrific person. Deemed a Vampire in the sense that she drank and bathed in the blood of her victims, but she herself was not a "true" vampire in that she didn't have fangs and couldn't go out in the sunlight, etc. Elizabeth became pregnant as the result of a brief affair with a peasant man in 1574. When her condition became evident, she was sequestereduntil the baby's birth, due to her engagement to Count Ferenc Nadasdy. They were married in May of 1575. Since Nadasdy was a soldier, he was frequently away for long periods of time. This left Bathory with the duties of managing the affairs of the Nadasdy family estate, Castle Sarvar. It was here that Elizabeth's career of evil truly began, with the disciplining of the large household staff, especially the young girls. It was after her husbands death that she started in with her atrocities. One of her servants pulled...

The Stone and Modern Science (Continuation of the Philosopher's Stone)

Though the notion of a simple philosopher's stone of the alchemic sense fell out of scientific conception by at least the 19th century, its metaphors and imagery persisted: man's attempt to discover the essential secret of the universe, redemptively transforming not just lead into gold, but death into life. In 1901, Ernest Rutherford and Frederick Soddy discovered that radioactivity was a sign of fundamental changes within elements, and it was Soddy who quickly made the connection between this and the ancient search for the philosopher's stone (Soddy had studied alchemy extensively as a hobby). At the moment of realization that their radioactive thorium was converting itself into radium, bit by bit, Soddy later recalled that he shouted out: "Rutherford, this is transmutation!" Rutherford snapped back, "For Christ's sake, Soddy, don't call it transmutation. They'll have our heads off as alchemists." However the term stuck, in part because it...
